The C 414 XLS continues the legend that is the AKG C 414 series of condenser microphones, some would say beginning with the C 414 comb in 1971 but its origins start nearly two decades earlier with the C 12 which was introduced in 1953. As with all electronic items things have come a long way since the 50’s and the C 414 XLS has certainly taken advantage of such advances.
Features
With a broad feature set, boasting being “one of the quietest microphones in the world (6 dBa-A only)” and the ability to handle sound pressure levels up to 158 dB SPL, the C 414 XLS offers the flexibility and capability to competently handle just about any real world recoding environment you are likely to come across. The list of features includes:
- Silver colored woven front grill
- High sensitivity and extremely low self noise
- Rugged double mesh for unaffected acoustics and high RF immunity
- Elastic capsule suspension greatly minimizes structurally-transmitted noise from chassis vibration
- Cutting edge technology and state-of-the- art components ensure shortest signal path and extra protection against moisture
- High sound pressure level capability up to 158 dB SPL and incredible dynamic range of 152 dB
- Peak Hold LED: displays even the shortest overload peaks
- Two-color LEDs provide quick visual indication of selected polar pattern and output overload
- Three switchable bass cut filters and three pre-attenuation pads
- Nine switchable polar patterns for placement and application flexibility
- Lock Mode: all controls can be easily disabled for trouble-free use
- Also available as stereo set (selected by AKG’s sophisticated matching method)
- Comes complete with metal carrying case, spider-type shock mount H 85, pop filter H 85 and windscreen W 414
- Designed, engineered and built in Vienna, Austria
There are actually two iterations of the C 414 avaliable today, the XLS and the XL II, both having nine pickup patters, Omnidirectional, cardioid, and figure eight and more, three switchable pre-attenuation levels (0, -6, -12, -18dB) and three switchable bass filters. To combat wind noise and vibrations from stage floors there are two step 40/80 Hz filters at 12 dB/octave, and then for minimizing the proximity effect there is a gentle 160 Hz filter at 6 dB/octave.

The C 414 XLS is a great all rounder with the ability to pickup all the details of any acoustic instrument as it maintains the sonic characteristics of the longest lived C 414 model, the C 414B-ULS. The C 414 XLS delivers the well-known C 414 Sound – for any application by being engineered for the highest linearity and neutral sound.

What are SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificates, and what do they mean to you?
These certificates are issued by a number of institutions, such as VeriSign, Equifax & GoDaddy, and they provide a secure connection between your computer and the computer that is running the checkout you are using. They verify the identity of the remote computer to you, so you know that the site you are using is who they say they are, and proves they are a trusted retailer and not someone trying to steal your credit card details. And it provides your identity to the remote computer, so they know you are not someone trying to hack into their checkout. Then as the data is being sent back and forth over the internet, the SSL certificate encrypts the data, so that no one can “listen in” to the data packets and pinch your credit card details.
All in all it provides you with the necessary peace of mind to purchase online, by ensuring everything is as it appears to be.
